pretty much combining sex and religion here. Most of these lyrics come straight out of the bible, but the heart of it is about yearning for someone. This is one of the first songs I’ve written where I didn’t care if it made sense lyrically, just that the words felt good coming out of my mouth. That’s something I wanted to try after hearing Jeff Tweedy of Wilco talk about how he writes lyrics.
This was another one where James Treichler and I used quite a few samples and tried to give it more of an R&B feel. My guitarist Matthew Pittman came in and recorded this big nasty electric guitar over the whole song. James and I thought it was too much, so we muted it. But when we sent the record to Ken Coomer (producer and founding member of Uncle Tupelo & Wilco) to mix it, he unmuted it because he thought it gave it more of a ‘raw’ feel. He was right.
Lyrics
I don’t wanna be your friend
I don’t wanna see your face again
If I can’t have you
Nothing else will do
And I don’t wanna play this game
Tell me if you just don’t feel the same
But if you still want me
Show it please
Bind up
The broken
Hearted
Amen, Amen, Amen
I see you standing there
I always see you standing there
Your love is better than wine
Strong as death
Bind up
The broken
Hearted
Amen, Amen
Bind up
The broken
Hearted
Amen, Amen, Amen
