My wife Kaetlyn told me recently that what she loved most about me when we first met were my sad eyes.
Lyrically I became fixated on the concept of what actually needs to happen for two people to fall in love.
This is the first recording I’ve ever used drum samples on. I’ve been into Holly Humberstone and Leon Bridges these past few years, and I love their use of samples. I wanted to try. It was a challenge to make them sound cool and not like a guy trying them for the first time. My producer James Treichler was a huge help. This whole song was just him and I sitting in his home studio and bringing it to life. I gave him the sounds I liked, he built the beat, and we layered everything else on top. It was a blast.
It is pretty different from anything I’ve recorded before, but what’s the point in making new music if you aren’t gonna try some new stuff?
This song was selected as a semifinalist in the 2024 International Songwriting Competition.
