I was a mess through most of my twenties. When I had finally had enough I dropped to my knees for the first time in my life and asked God to take the pain away. This song is a reminder to not forget about that moment when I was given a life again.
I’m sure this song has lots of subliminal influences, but only one stands out to me - Van Morrison. Particularly “You’re My Woman” from the Tupelo Honey album. One of my top 5 favorite records.
This song by far has the most instruments and layers to it on the EP. It just kept getting bigger. It started with the band playing live in the studio, and then I kept hearing other melodies to go on top of it. I hear melodies in my head and sing them into my phone so we can replicate them in the studio. We added keys, strings, horns, gospel singers, glockenspiel, and probably many other things I don’t even remember. Somehow it works, though. It can be tricky getting all those sounds to fit, but I think we pulled it off.
This song was selected as a semifinalist in the 2024 International Songwriting Competition.
Lyrics
Remember when I found you
You’d been bawling like a baby on the floor
Begging for another chance
You just couldn’t bear the thought of it being your fault
You were living a million lies
When I heard you call
Just look at you now
You’ve got it all
And I was here with you
And I’m here with you now
Remember when you got the news
Life would never be quite what you thought
Remember all those little things
Just enough to keep you hanging on
Hard times will come again
Don’t forget
That I was here with you
And I’m here with you now
